Obituary of George J. McMahon

George J. McMahon, age 87, of Glendale, Arizona, formerly of Bridgeport, husband of the late Jane Powell McMahon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 4, 2017. Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, son of the late John and Gertrude O'Neil McMahon, George attended the Immaculate Conception elementary School, Northeastern Seminary and put himself through college graduating from Pace University with a B.S. in accounting. George lived in Rochester, NY and for many years in Bridgeport before moving to Lakeland, Florida and most recently to Glendale, Arizona. He worked for the American Molasses Company and City Services in New York and later for the Norwalk Hat Co., Batchelder Industries the Marx and CBS Toy companies and mainly for the Bridgeport Machines Company and finally the RTC Corporation of Tampa, Florida from which he retired. George was a longtime parishoner of St. Emery's Church where he was a lector and sang in the Church choir. He was also a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus with the Park City Council. George enjoyed reading and music, was an avid sports fan, he liked hockey, football and baseball. Most of all he loved the times that he spent with his family on his vacations back east. He is survived by his son, Kevin McMahon and his wife Helenann of Stratford, daughters Kathleen Stepanowski and her husband John of Bridgeport and Eileen Melcher of Glendale, Arizona. He leaves behind his grandchildren Rebecca and Brendan McMahon as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Jane, he was predeceased by his son in law James Melcher. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-8 pm in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Rd., Fairfield Center with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Additional services and interment in Mountain Grove Cemetery will be private.
