Obituary of Byron D. Peterson

Please share a memory of Byron to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Byron D Peterson, the beloved husband of Jane Weimer Peterson, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on January 20, 2024.

He was the son of Percy and Daisy (Thompson) Peterson, born in Peekskill, NY on July 30, 1944, and a longtime resident of Shelton, CT where he resided with his family for more than 40 years. Byron graduated from Michigan State University in 1966 and worked in Human Resources for the next 44 years with Fortune 500 companies such as GTE, Warner Lambert and Branson.

In his younger years he served as the NAACP chapter president in Peekskill, NY and was actively engaged in the Urban League in the 1980s-90s. Byron was also an avid sports fan, and after playing football for the Spartans, remained a devoted fan for the remainder of his life. He volunteered as a coach for Shelton's Pop Warner football teams, Trumbull youth basketball, and served as a CT state timer for Track and Field. Generations of young athletes will remember hearing his voice booming across fields and courts.

Byron was active in St Paul's Episcopal Church with the choir, the Church Street Players and as a senior warden. Many will remember his love of music and the strength of his beautiful tenor voice. Byron was an advocacy volunteer for AARP, for which he was honored as Volunteer of the Year, and was an active member of the Brownson Country Club in Huntington, CT. Byron will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather that treasured family gatherings and family trips across the United States and internationally to destinations such as Europe, Asia, and the South Caucasus, and especially for his love of golf. He could easily recount his entire golf game – shot for shot – to all who would listen.

Byron was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Robert (Bob) Wise. Byron is survived by his wife of 57 years Jane; his son, Doug Peterson, and his wife, Gabriella Szennyei; his daughter, Elizabeth Peterson Lucal, and her husband Richard; his son, David Peterson, and his wife Kerri Herlihy Peterson; and his daughter, Rebecca Romine, and her husband, Brad; his sister, Dolores Wise; 11 grandchildren, (Joseph Herlihy, Shannah Peterson, Marlee Peterson Goodhue, Isabella Lucal, Sunny Lucal, Olivia Lucal, Julian Romine, Magdalena Lucal, Caleb Romine, Lucas Romine, and Ava Peterson); 5 great-grandchildren, (Addison, Bellamy, Brody, Mazelyn, and Cade) with a 6th expected in February; and a large extended, loving family, including many nieces, nephews, grand-nephew and nieces, in-laws, and dear friends too numerous to mention.

His entire life was defined by a passionate loyalty to all he loved, and he will be greatly missed by those who loved him.

A private service for his immediate family will be held at the Lesko Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service for family and friends which will be held in the spring (date to be announced).
