Obituary of Christy Carabina

Christy Carabina, age 85, of Fairfield, beloved husband of Florence Cipu Carabina, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. Born and raised in North Grosvenordale, CT on July 28, 1931, son of the late Antonio and Costa Vriga Carabina, Mr. Carabina had been a Fairfield Town resident for most of his life. He was a Veteran of the Korean War, serving in the US Air Force. After serving in the US Air Force he went on to graduate from the Putnam Technical School and began working at Simonds Tool and Die in Southbridge MA. He later went on to work as a Machine Technician for the US Baird Corporation in Stratford, CT for 37 years until his retirement. Christy was a longtime member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church and the Church Seniors Group. He also belonged to the American Legion Post 61 and while in North Grosvenordale to the Masonic Order. In his younger years, Christy was very athletic, excelling in basketball and baseball. He was a prospective professional catcher, drafted by the St. Louis Browns in 1952 and played in their farm system for the Whytheville VA Statesmen. He also played Semi-Pro baseball for the Cluett Peabody Arrows. One of his favorite memories was catching a 20 inning game while playing on the Mitchell Air Force Baseball team. During his High School Years, Christy was a member of the Tourtellotte Memorial Basketball team which won State Championships in 1949 and 1950 and the Quinnebaug Valey Conference Championship from 1948-1950, He was also the first three year captain of their baseball team. Christy was inducted into the Tourtellotte Memorial High School Athletic Hall of Fame, class of 2011. In 1980 he won the Connecticut State Bowling Association State Tournament being named the Singles champion. Christy was an avid gardener, golfer and bowler who also enjoyed boating and fishing with his family, attending stock car races at the Thompson and Stafford Motor Speedways and following his beloved Boston Red Sox, Celtics and New England Patriots. A loving husband and father, he most cherished the time that he spent with his family. He will be greatly missed. In addition to Florence, his loving wife of 57 years, Christy leaves his devoted sons, Mark and Matthew Carabina, all of Fairfield, a sister Rita Carabina of North Grosvenordale, CT. A brother George Carabina and his wife Debra of Woodstock, CT, a special niece and nephew Meghan and Antonio both from Woodstock, CT. A sister in law Julie Cipu, as well as several additional nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his twin sons, Luke and John, brothers in law George and Nicholas Cipu, sisters in law Despa Cipu and Sofia Nastu and her husband Ray and nephew Bobby Cipu. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 am DIRECTLY at St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Rd., Easton with burial to follow in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield with full Military Honors. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4-8 in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Rd., Fairfield Center, with the Trisagion Service at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Dimitrie Church. The Carabina family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Pasquale Masone, the Doctors, Nurses and Aides at the ICU unit at St Vincents Medical Center for the care and comfort that they gave Christy during his illness.
