Obituary of George J. Roccas

George J. Roccas, dedicated father and husband, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 25, 2023. He was 81 years old.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda Roccas (Sempf); his son, Jim Roccas, and Jim's wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Tyler and Kyle; as well as his first cousin, Maria Andronikos and her family.

George was born on January 7, 1942, in Queens, New York City to Margaret Roccas (Brown) and Stratis Roccas. After his father passed away when George was four years old, he and his mother moved to East Orange, New Jersey, where he grew up. He attended Clifford Scott High School in East Orange and then Princeton University where he studied mathematics. Soon after college, he served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. His love of math caused him to pursue actuarial science as a career.

He was an actuary for various firms including Prudential, Towers, Perrin, Forster & Crosby, and Coopers & Lybrand. For these firms, he worked with corporate clients to provide consulting services for their corporate pension plans. While at Coopers & Lybrand, he was transferred to their Philadelphia office in 1987, so he and family moved from West Orange, NJ to Devon, PA, where he and Linda lived until early 2023.

In his retirement, he was able to pursue various passions and interests. A dedicated family man, George was able to spend more time with his wife and son. He was also able to connect with his family in Greece (his father was a Greek immigrant) as well as construct a family tree of his mother's side of the family, which had been in the U.S. for a while. His great grandfather served in the Union Army in the Civil War (16th Pennsylvania Cavalry), so George joined the Chester County, PA chapter of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) and was the Treasurer for the chapter for a number of years.

George also loved to spend summers on Cape Cod. While there, he enjoyed spending time with his wife Linda, playing tennis, collecting paintings of local artists, attending Cape Cod League baseball games and going to the beach. Back home in Pennsylvania, he enjoyed playing tennis and bridge with friends, participating in SUVCW events, attending classical music performances and opera, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and Thursday, January 4, 2024 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-9:00 p.m. in the Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield.
