Obituary of John Arthur Morthanos

John A. Morthanos, age 73, of Stratford, beloved husband of Paula M. Morthanos, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2022. Born in New York City on February 7, 1949, son of the late Gustave and Mary Maggio Morthanos, John had been a Stratford resident for 30 years. He was a graduate of Hunter College and worked in the publishing industry in Single Copy Management, Direct Marketing, and Retail Development for over 35 years. For the past 13 years he was a marketing consultant for his own company, Morthanos.com, increasing circulation sales for his magazine clients in the retail marketplace including airports, bookstores, grocery stores, and drug stores through his knowledge of cover design and distribution. John loved growing up in New York and had an incredible knowledge of its history, often being the tour guide for visiting guests, bringing them to Brooklyn to show them the location of the underground railroad. He regaled them with stories as they explored the Cloisters and made sure they experienced Manhattan's last remaining Dutch farmhouse with a trip to the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum at 204th St. and Broadway. John also expressed a deep appreciation and knowledge of music. He enthusiastically shared his large library of artists with friends and family. It was in 2011 when John was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and received a lung transplant in September 2012. That began his journey as an IPF Ambassador providing support, compassion, guidance and advocacy for patients and their family members whether it was a phone call, a cup of coffee, or through his involvement in IPF support groups. John was given an extra 10 years of life through the medical brilliance, compassionate care and friendship of Dr. Selim M. Arcasoy, Columbia-NYP, and Dr. Miridu Gulati, Yale, for which the family is forever grateful. In addition to his loving wife, Paula, survivors include his favorite niece, JoAnn Meyer, of Newport, RI; and his sister, Dawn Tanenbaum, of Hackensack, NJ. He was predeceased by his sister, Karen Tolfree. Following John's wishes, no services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
