I started watching As The World Turns with my Daddy, who worked 2nd shift, so he was the one who was home with me during the day, when I was about 10 years old. "Kim Hughes" was always one of my favorite characters, I looked up to her. It was after watching the show for a couple of years that my mom told me that Kathryn was from Princeton, Illinois, which was where my mom and my brother were both born, and a town that was only 7 miles away from where we lived at the time. Mom and I always did our grocery shopping on Friday evenings, at a store called Eagles, which, at that time was located where the Princeton library is now located. One certain Friday evening, while shopping, Mom and I were in the produce aisle, and I saw a lady dressed in a floor-length fur coat shopping with an older lady. When she happened to turn around, my jaw dropped, and I couldn't believe my eyes! It was Kathryn Hayes, my "Kim Hughes"!!! I pointed her out to my mom to make sure I wasn't seeing things, and she confirmed that I was correct! I immediately walked over to her, and asked if she was indeed Kathryn Hayes, although I believe I asked her if she was Kim Hughes, because I was just so nervous! She laughed, and said that yes, she sure was! I told her what a HUGE fan I was of hers and of the show, and rather than being short with me, or making me feel like I was interrupting or inconveniencing her, she actually stood there and carried on a conversation with my mom and me, even introducing us to HER mother! It was a moment of my life that I will never, ever forget, and made me admire her even more than I already did. Her friendliness and kindness to two total strangers is something that completely touched my heart! I am very saddened to find out about her death (and, yes, I seriously just discovered she passed away a few minutes before I started my post), and I hope and pray for peace and comfort for her friends and family. May God bless all of you!!!

As a child, watching "As the World Turns" was a daily early afternoon break for my mother and grandmother that continued right up to my grandmother's death. After that, when Mom when back to work, watching "ATWT" on the two days a week that she wasn't working was a way to stay in touch with her mother. As an adult, I would occasionally watch an episode, and would mention to Mom that "Kim and Bob" were on that episode. I also made sure to watch the last ever episode and saw Kim and Bob go off to their "happily ever after." My hope is that Ms. Hays has now entered her "happily ever after" for all eternity. Rest in peace.

Kathryn Hays - a wonderful and kind lady and actress - superb as mute Gem in Star Trek and well-known as Kim in As The World Turns, so many other good roles through the years - her sister, Connie, served with me on the City of Pinellas Park Library Board in FL for some 20 years. Kathryn graciously replied to my letter and signed my photo that Connie had given her. I treasure those and will always remember her kindness.

To the family of Kathryn Hays:
I am so very sorry for your loss. While I knew her as a soap opera actress, it seems she was a beautiful friend. In May 2020 she participated in a virtual “soap reunion” with her soap “husband”, Don Hastings, and her soap “son”, Scott DeFreitas. I was struck how this man who was now a father, wanted them both to know—and Kathryn especially—how they and she had been there to give him love, guidance, and support as he grew up on screen. That beats any award she ever won or was nominated for. Her inner beauty glowed outward. May you be comforted by the talent and love she gave to you and shared with the world.

My sincere condolences on the passing of a truly beautiful lady ! Ms. Hays invited me to her home overlooking Long Island Sound when we both were part of the GBS. We discussed music and I provided help in the pronunciation of Italian for a narration she was to give at an upcoming concert. Happy memories ! God Speed !

Kathy…..Kim, your loss is felt by so many of us who watched you everyday on ATWT. My condolences to Kathy’s daughter & family. I was so glad to watch you & Bob Hastings & Scott/Andy being interviewed by Alan Locher 2 yrs ago. It was touching to hear Scott express to you & Don what you both meant to him & the positive influence you had on him as a young person and then as an adult. You will be greatly missed and gratefully for us will live on…online on ATWT. Rest In Peace Kathy.

I always found the fact that Gracie brought us together interesting. We helped you with her, we helped walk her for you but most important, we had some great conversations about animals, history, and television. Thank you for welcoming us in to your home and your life. It was a very special time for us. Rest now.
