My first boss and a lifelong pal, Mike (or Mikey as I often called him, after a silly cereal commercial) shared his gift of creative curiosity with me and helped me develop a similar capacity too. I particularly recall a special toy flash gun he made for Mike Jr., carefully and slowly designed and carved by hand - a fun, and yet exquisite piece of work. We had a lot of fun at MTI, and Mike USUALLY let me stretch the limits, as long as he has plausible deniability. Like the time we had an ugly necktie contest (yes, we wore ties daily back then), or the time we popped the ceiling tiles out by igniting a hydrogen ballon in the office as it floated up and away from my desk. Or maybe the hallway races of air-powered toy cars that nearly tripped up one of the senior executives. We never did get around to the motorized drafting stool races, but Mike was all for it.
I often tell a story about our first trip to Sweden together, to visit with United Stirling our contract partner company. In those days, checking in late could often win a first class seat, and we did just that. Mike really enjoyed the meal and champagne, so when we arrived in the morning and had to sit in a boring presentation, his head was bouncing a bit as he fought to stay awake. When he finally dropped off, his head tipped back and triggered a mighty snort that woke him and brought out his famous smile! It was the most engaging moment of the whole day.
Not long ago, Mike claimed he was to mean to die; but we all knew better - not mean at all, but a mighty fine fellow with a life well lived.
