Obituary of William E. Huth

William E. Huth Faith, family, justice and music were constants in his life. Born in South Bend, Indiana on July 26, 1931, William Edward Huth was the son of Dr. Edward Andrew Huth and Margaret Emonds Huth and the younger brother of Mary Jo Huth. Mr. Huth died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 89 on January 16, 2021. Not long after he was born, his family moved to Dayton, Ohio where his father was a Professor at the University of Dayton and his mother, a piano teacher. Mr. Huth was a 1948 graduate of the Chaminade High School in Dayton, Ohio. He also studied for many years at the Proctor School of Music in Dayton. He attended University of Dayton, graduating in 1952 with honors. Mr. Huth credited his mother with instilling in him a love of music and the Catholic faith. An accomplished violinist who at one point considered becoming a professional musician, he played numerous concerts throughout Ohio up until he graduated from college, with his mother accompanying him on piano. After graduating from college, he served as an Infantry Officer at Ft. Benning, Georgia from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. Upon completing his military service, Mr. Huth enrolled in Yale Law School to fulfill his dream of becoming a business lawyer. He served on the Yale Law Journal and graduated in 1957 at the top of his class, earning an offer to work at the New York-based law firm Kelley, Drye & Warren. While working as a young associate in New York, Mr. Huth met his future wife of fifty-eight years, Mary Pamela Hall. They were married on August 11, 1962 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. Together they had three children. Mr. Huth's career took him from New York to Michigan to Pittsburgh and finally Connecticut. He held in-house positions at Chrysler Corporation, Westinghouse Electric, and Combustion Engineering. He found the greatest satisfaction with firm life and founded two firms over the course of his career, Ziegler, Dykehouse, Wise & Huth in Detroit, and later Huth, Grinnell & Flaherty in Stamford, Connecticut. He cherished his lifelong friendships with his partners at these firms. In the latter part of his career, Mr. Huth focused on prosecuting commercial claims against the Governments of Iran and Iraq on behalf of various companies in the International Court of Claims and served as an arbitrator. Mr. Huth loved being a lawyer. Over the course of his long career he taught as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University of Law in Detroit and Pace University School of Law in White Plains, New York. He also served as President and Board Member of the Westchester and Fairfield County Corporation Counsel Association, in Stamford, Connecticut. He was active in many other U.S. and international bar associations and served as an arbitrator for the Institution of International Commercial Law's Arbitration Moot Arbitration Competition in Vienna, Austria for many years. A devout Catholic and lay affiliate of the Society of Mary Order of Priests and Brothers, Mr. Huth was always active in the Church. He taught Sunday School for twelve years at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he also served as a Sunday Lector and Catechist to conversion candidates. In addition, he served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut for many years. He enjoyed debating fine points of theology with his friends and priests. Mr. Huth loved his family. A sentimental soul, he saved every love note from his wife and every drawing and note from his children and grandchildren, carefully saving them in folders marked "cherished" memories. He also loved dogs and enjoyed walking his Newfoundland "Nefa" around town and at the beach. No memorial to Mr. Huth would be complete without mentioning his love of sailing and all the many friends he met through sailing. He began sailing in the Great Lakes. After moving to the East Coast, he sailed up and down the Atlantic Coast of the United States and the Caribbean, ultimately spending a year and a half on his last boat, the Lyra, with his wife and son. Friends and family joined them on the adventure, making for happy, lasting memories. He is survived by his wife Mary Pamela Huth, children Alan Edward Huth and Katharine Huth Parker, and grandchildren Matthew Edward Parker and Benjamin Hall Parker, and his cousin Marygene Huth. He is predeceased by his parents and sister and his son Stephen Edward Huth.
