Dear Faith and Hope,
As the reading specialist at Riverfield School, it was a pleasure to work with your dad. Throughout his career, Joe discovered, promoted and implemented learning programs that enriched the students' academic, creative, and physical development. And, at the same time, he inspired teachers to investigate and apply child-centered teaching practices. Joe encouraged and enabled me to utilize the latest research on how children learn to read and write. As the writing process teacher at Sherman School, it was my good fortune to work with your mother and her students. Your mom and dad had a profound influence on the lives of so many children, parents, and teachers.
With deepest sympathy to you and your families,
Mary Wade

I attended Grasmere Elementary School and I will always remember his warm and inviting smile. Always cared about the children in the school and how to make things better.

Joe was always a champion for children and teachers. Although I never worked with him, I know he valued what was done in every teachers’s classroom. He was a gentleman in every way. He will be missed by all who knew him.

My most sincere condolences for the loss of your father. Though I never taught under him, I worked with Claire, your mom, and I knew him through her. Also I knew him through our retired teachers' organization, and I have read many of his published op ed pieces. Joe and Claire were two of the loveliest, most charming and most truly dedicated to service people that I have ever known. I feel honored to have been their friend. May they rest in peace. They will always be remembered and loved by me and by all who have been fortunate enough to have known them.

Dear Faith and Hope,
So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He was a truly unique individual who shaped the lives of all he came in contact with. From personal experience, Joe took a chance on a brand new teacher fresh out of college, a free spirit. When he interviewed me, he asked me to teach a reading lesson in ,hopefully, what would become my classroom. I did and I guess he liked what he saw because I was hired. Many years later, he confided in me that was the only time he did that. He gently reminded me that taking 24 third graders across state lines to the Bronx Zoo would probably not be the best way to conclude my animal unit. Perhaps the Beardsley Zoo would do. It did. He let his teachers work to their strengths and was always so positive. Through his eagerness to explore different teaching experiences, I was able to teach in a non-graded program and work with him on developing his plan for a science /math magnet school. Personally and professionally I was so fortunate to have our life paths cross.
He will be greatly missed, but he will be forever remembered.

I learned so much from Joe during my years at Riverfield School in Fairfield. His leadership had a major impact on my career as an educator. What I loved about Joe was he trusted all of us to work with our students in the ways we thought were best. He was always open to new ideas and supported us in whatever ways were needed.
My condolences to Faith and Hope and your families
