Bob and I shared many events, based on the friendship of our boys, including baseball coaching and Indian Guides, and we always had a lot of fun doing it. My wife, Patti, and I got to know the whole family, living as we did only a short distance from their home, and we always found them to be warm, loving people. Bob and I and the boys, Bobby and Rich, once participated in the annual Memorial Day parade in Fairfield, in our Indian Guides outfits, and, as we passed by, a kid on the street pointed at Bob and yelled "Mom, look, a real Indian!" Bob thought it was hilarious, and that's just the way he was...kind, funny, smart, a really great person, and a friend. I'm very sorry to learn of his passing and wish his family peace and our fondest condolences.

Dear Handal Family,
We are heartbroken at the news of Bob’s passing. He will be sorely missed among the Sturbridge neighbors who have known him for decades and enjoyed his humor, his wisdom, his enthusiasms and shared memories through thick and thin. When I got elected to the town legislature, a total greenhorn with an ambitious agenda, Bob gave me the only valuable advice I ever got: “Don’t let anyone bully you; keep your floor speeches short; and hand the reporters a summary.” He monitored my performances on Fair TV video, and was my esteemed “Coach Bob,” for he had served as neighborhood representative years before me.
We had lots of laughs and shared political gossip whenever Bob passed me on the corner gardening. The last time was right before this November election, speculating on the voting results.
I cannot imagine life on Sturbridge Lane without Bob Handal. He was, and is, simply unforgettable.
God bless his magnanimous soul, and may he rest in eternal peace and comfort. A donation in his memory is being made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

My favorite memories of Mr. Handal--because he will always be Mr. Handal to me--were when his son, Bob, and I had done something amazingly dumb. Which we did fairly often. Mr. Handal would always shake his head in this mix of mild disbelief and amusement, as if to say, "Guys, guys, guys...I understand that you have to do dumb things...but why do you have to do SUCH dumb things?"
Rest in peace, Mr. Handal. And thank you for all the kindness and hospitality, and good will you showed me all those years.
